Mitigating the water hammer effect in hydraulic presses
- By Victor Esteban
- Apr 1, 2017
- Bending and Forming
- Article
The water hammer effect is produced when a moving element collides with a stationary one, like a medieval battering ram. The water hammer effect damages presses because it causes vibrations, sudden sharp pressure increases, and high stresses on piping and mechanisms. Measures to reduce the water hammer effect include the use of hoses or flexible tubing that absorbs the pulse, mechanical regulation of the opening and closing, gradual slide braking, gradual decompression, and design of group manifolds. Stampers should make sure their presses are outfitted with these devices to extend press life.
