What's cool at IMTS?

Here’s my Top 10 list from the International Manufacturing Technology Show, Sept. 6-13, in Chicago.

1. ESAB Welding & Cutting Products and Precision Light Systems introduced their hybrid laser welding technology, which combines laser welding with conventional GMAW. The laser provides deep penetration with less heat distortion than other welding technologies and a very quick laser weld when the gaps are fairly thin. The GMAW process allows for a more conventional weld, but ends up using less filler wire because the laser penetration leaves a much smaller weld gap to fill. What’s cool about it? It’s in the marketplace now because it won a U.S. Navy technology competition and should ultimately result in more cost-effective shipbuilding.
