Software helps control, minimize welding distortion

Pam-Assembly simulation software from ESI Group helps to control and minimize distortion during welding fabrication.

The welding process is simulated on a local model in which comprehensive welding physics are manipulated to evaluate internal forces generated by the welding joint. They are then stored in a local model database. It is based on an intuitive workflow and does not require an advanced knowledge of finite element analysis, the company states.

The software offers a five-step methodology to assist users in finding the best welding fabrication process from the design stage to the manufacturing stage. The first step in modeling a welding assembly is to access the local model database to choose the weld joint configuration. The next step focuses on the generation of the global model, based on the different components to be assembled.

After defining the welding sequence and clamping conditions, the software computes distortion caused by the welding assembly process. The last step consists of an analysis that allows optimization of the welding distortion resulting from the fabrication process.
