Raphael Matos' No. 2 car and Vitor Meira's No. 14 car locked wheels in the 174th lap of the Indianapolis 500 in May, causing Meira's car to slide on its side along the racetrack wall. Lincoln Electric equipment—two Ranger® 305G engine-driven welding machines and two LN-25 (now LN-25 PRO) wire feeders—was used by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway crew to make fast, thorough repairs to the wall barrier, allowing the race to restart.
Repairs to the SAFER (steel and foam energy reduction) racing wall barrier system generally consists of welding 3/16-in. mild steel tubing and plate.
