Tweet, tweet

There's a conversation in the movie "Clerks" where characters Randal Graves and Dante Hicks, friends and fellow retail store clerks, are talking about Graves' interest in going to a funeral:

Dante Hicks: "You hate people!"

Randal Graves: "But I love gatherings, isn't it ironic?"

How things have changed since the early 1990s. If only these dynamic duds lived in today's world where you don't even need to communicate with people face-to-face. You can just break out your mobile phone and text them.

One-on-one communication be damned. Let's just meet up at the party.

But this type of communication is hardly limited to teenagers and the audibly inept. I know several parents who have had to learn to communicate through a keypad just to keep up with their kids.

And so the evolution continues. Now social media has exploded, and everyone that I know is on Facebook and Twitter. If I'm involved with either, that's usually a sign that the fad is near an end, but this looks to be continuing for some time.

So where does this take us? The FABRICATOR magazine is now on Twitter. You can find a general twitter from the magazine staff or a more personalized one from our very own Vicki Bell, our Web content manager.

You don't have to wait until the party to know what's happening with the magazine and thefabricator.com. We shoot out these quick updates on what's happening, and you get to keep in the loop of the articles and events that might be of interest to you or your business.

Why tweet? Considering only three months ago I thought of the song "Rockin' Robin" whenever someone mentioned tweets, that's a good question. I think Twitter makes sense because it's somewhat unobtrusive. All messages are less than 140 characters. If the message doesn't make the case for the receiver to further explore it, the receiver can vanquish it easily.

From a marketing standpoint, The FABRICATOR can spread the word about all it has to offer. You know, it's like word-of-mouth advertising without actually opening a pie hole.

So please join in and follow us on Twitter. I can't promise that it'll be as much fun as a gathering, but you'll be more informed.

If you don't want to follow through on connecting with Twitter, please take note of this resounding endorsement from social media expert and author David Seaman: "We're seeing 30- and 40-year-olds acting like overly emotional teenagers on Twitter. It's not all that healthy."

Whatever.

(In case you were wondering, The FABRICATOR isn't on Facebook yet. In February I didn't think it made much sense. We'll see what happens in the coming months.)
