The FAB 40 list is created with the help of those metal fabricators willing to share their revenue numbers and company information with The FABRICATOR and its readership.
The first step in the information gathering occurred in February when an email was sent out to slightly more than 1,500 publication subscribers who also identified their companies as being part of the fabricated metal product sector, as defined by the North American Industry Classification System. The email requested company financial information, feedback on current operations, and outlook for 2012. A follow-up e-mail letters was sent in early March to those companies that did not respond to previous attempts to contact them.
These companies that submitted responses were then ranked according to self-reported 2011 revenue. Because most, if not all, companies are privately held, independent verification of reported revenue was not possible.
