hardness testing

noun

Definition

  1. In a hardness test, the material is held between a steel anvil and a pointed indenter. A load is applied to the indenter, and the distance the indenter travels into the material is measured. This measurement provides a hardness value to the material. See Vickers test, Knoop test, Brinell test, and Rockwell test.
