Definition

  1. The processing area in a steel mill where hot-rolled and cooled steel is immersed in dilute acid to remove iron oxide and scale from the steel's surface. The strip is then side-trimmed to tight tolerances, and finally oil is applied as a rust preventive and to provide lubrication for any subsequent rolling.
