Baltimore light-rail vehicles to use ABB traction technology in retrofit

Power and automation technology group ABB, Cary, N.C., has obtained a contract from Alstom Transport to supply new traction converters associated with the modernized train control management system (TCMS) and new electrical control panels for the overhaul of Baltimore’s entire fleet of 53 light-rail vehicles. The vehicles are operated by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA).

ABB will replace the existing traction equipment using its Bordline CC400 for propulsion with an integrated battery charger. It also will supply a new train control system, including both hardware and software, as well as new electrical distribution and control panels, including low-voltage components and high-speed circuit breakers.
