AK Steel's Rockport Works reaches safety milestone

AK Steel has announced that employees of its Rockport, Indiana Works have surpassed 1,000 clear days without experiencing a single lost-time or restricted-activity injury. The safety milestone was reached March 30.

"Congratulations to our Rockport employees for their tremendous safety achievement," said James L. Wainscott, president and CEO. "We salute them for being dedicated to AK Steel's goal of zero injuries by placing safety first each working day."

Rockport Works has earned several safety recognitions in recent years, including the Indiana Dept. of Labor's STAR designation under the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in 2002, which signifies that the plant's safety program goes above and beyond the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements; and the inaugural Indiana Chamber of Commerce Safety Award in 1999, recognizing the plant's comprehensive safety training program and safety record. The plant also is certified under the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 standard for environmental management systems.
