EWI engineer wins 2014 Elihu Thomson Resistance Welding Award

EWI, Columbus, Ohio, has announced that Jerry Gould, technology leader for EWI’s Resistance and Solid State Welding group, has been selected as this year’s Elihu Thomson Resistance Welding Award recipient. The annual award recognizes outstanding contribution to the technology and application of resistance welding.

Gould, who has been with EWI since its founding in the mid-1980s, focuses on resistance spot welding, particularly of advanced high-strength steel and aluminum sheet. More recently he has focused on dissimilarmetals joining and development of new-generation resistance welding processes. His research includes seam welding, projection welding, flash welding, resistance butt welding, and friction welding.

Throughout his career, Gould has made significant contributions to the field of resistance and solid-state welding, including the award of six patents and the publication of more than 140 technical papers. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 20 EWI Cooperative Research Reports.

The Elihu Thomson Award is sponsored by the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA) and was formulated in 1985 during the RWMA’s 50th anniversary to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the invention of resistance welding.
