Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 157,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.4 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Job growth continued in several service-providing industries, but manufacturing employment was about unchanged, adding only 3,000 jobs. The industry added 76,000 jobs in 2004; nearly all of the gain occurred early in the year. Manufacturing jobs declined from September through November.
