Manufacturing Institute names president, vice presidents

The Manufacturing Institute, Washington, D.C., the research, education and work force arm of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), has named Emily Stover DeRocco, former assistant U.S. secretary of labor for employment and training, as president.

DeRocco works to improve the institute's work force strategies. She joined the NAM in January as president of the National Center for the American Workforce, which was established to promote public policies and public and private investments to help ensure an educated and prepared manufacturing work force. She continues to serve as a senior vice president for the NAM.

DeRocco came to the NAM from the Department of Labor, where she was nominated by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2001 as the head of the Employment and Training Administration (ETA). While with the ETA, DeRocco managed an annual budget of more than $10 billion for funding the country's work force investment system.

The Manufacturing Institute also appointed Bill Canis as vice president for research and innovation and Jennifer McNelly as vice president for education and the work force. Canis joined the institute in 1998 as executive director and has served as acting president. McNelly joined the NAM in January as senior director of the National Center for the American Workforce; she previously served as administrator of the ETA's Office of Regional Innovation.

The NAM is an industrial trade association that represents small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector in all 50 states.
