Steel Dynamics breaks ground on Florida joist, deck plant

Steel Dynamics Inc. has announced that its New Millennium Building Systems LLC subsidiary conducted a groundbreaking ceremony Oct 22 in Lake City, Fla., embarking on construction of a new $30 million steel fabrication facility.

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush participated in the ceremony along with Lake City and Columbia County, Fla., officials. Bert Hollman, Steel Dynamics' vice president and president of New Millennium Building Systems, represented SDI.

The new facility will provide building components for nonresidential construction projects in Florida and surrounding states. The plant's annual production capacity will be about 70,000 tons of joists, trusses, and girders, and about 50,000 tons of steel roof and floor decking. The company's Indiana steel mills will provide most of the steel used for fabrication and decking material.
