Whirlpool increases offer to buy Maytag

On August 10 Whirlpool increased its offer to buy Maytag a third time, proposing to buy the company for $1.79 billion, or $21 a share, in a half cash, half stock deal. The move prompted Maytag to reverse an earlier recommendation to its shareholders to accept Triton Acquisition Holding Company's all-cash deal.

The Whirlpool offer also includes a $120 million reverse breakup fee that would be paid to Maytag if regulators do not approve the acquisition.
