SSAB has awarded this year's international Swedish Steel Prize to the South African company Van Reenen Steel Ltd. The company has developed a lighter and more durable body for dump trucks in the mining industry.
The purpose of the prize is to provide inspiration and to disseminate knowledge about high-strength steel and the potential for developing lighter, safer, and more environmentally sound products.
Van Reenen uses high-strength, abrasion-resistant steel to create lighter dump truck with a sustainable structure. Vehicle weight is reduced by 8 tons, or 19 percent, and environmental impact is reduced because of lower emissions.
SSAB, a provider of value-added, high-strength steel, instituted the prize in 1999.
