Hobart offers welding prep course, certified supervisor exam

Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, Troy, Ohio, offers the one-week course Preparation for the AWS Certified Welding Supervisor Examination. The class begins Sept. 24 and will be offered again beginning Nov. 12.

The course will be taught by Hobart instructors Elmer Swank, Chuck Ford, Nelson Morales, and Russ Schurtz—all have obtained the welding supervisor certification (AWS-CWS). The instructors will conduct the AWS-CWS exam on the last day of the course.

Based on the AWS Manual for Certified Welding Supervisors, the program identifies a body of knowledge designed to help welding supervisors increase productivity and improve weld quality.

Prospective candidates must be high school graduates or hold a state- or military-approved high school equivalency diploma; provide employment information verifying a minimum three years of practical welding experience in a fabrication, construction, or other welding-related industry; or substitute three years of relevant teaching experience for one year of the practical experience requirement.

To meet the teaching requirement, the candidate must teach welding or a welding-related class full-time (or part-time on a full-time equivalent) at a trade school, college, university, or technical school.

Subjects covered in the examination include personnel management, supervision, qualification of personnel, safety, welding preparation and fabrication, planning, control, equipment, quality management, quality control, and codes and quality management. Candidates must apply for the exam and gain acceptance from the AWS certification department.
