AK Steel announces recipients of 2015 Sons and Daughters Scholarships

AK Steel, West Chester, Ohio, a producer of flat-rolled carbon, stainless, and electrical steel products, has announced the recipients of its 2015 Sons and Daughters Scholarships, which recognize employees’ children for outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.

Funded by the AK Steel Foundation, the scholarships are worth a maximum $20,000 each. The Middletown, Ohio, Community Foundation independently selects each recipient.

The recipients are:

  • Claire Conarroe, West Chester, Ohio, a student at Saint Ursula Academy. Her father, Steve Conarroe, works in the energy and utilities department at the Middletown Works.
  • Jennifer Dudek, Prospect, Pa., a student at Slippery Rock Area High School. Her father, Russ Dudek, works in the environmental affairs department at the Butler Works.
  • Luke French, Middletown, Ohio, a student at Madison High School. His father, Carl French, works in the cold strip maintenance department at the Middletown Works.
  • Katelyn Georgopoulos, Liberty Township, Ohio, a student at Lakota West High School. Her father, George Georgopoulos, works in the shipping department at the Middletown Works.
  • Skyler Hinchberger, Prospect, Pa., a student at Slippery Rock Area High School. Her father, Troy Hinchberger, works in the melt shop at the Butler Works.
  • Andrea Howard, Grayson, Ky., a student at East Carter County High School. Her stepfather, Christopher Lynd, works in the maintenance department at the Ashland Works.
  • Andrew Ickes, Jeromesville, Ohio, a student at Hillsdale High School. His stepfather, Keith Weber, works in the melt shop at the Ashland Works.
  • Ethan Kemp, Lebanon, Ohio, a student at Lebanon High School. His father, James Kemp, works in the environmental affairs department at the Middletown Works.
  • Cody Loveless, Middletown, Ohio, a student at Monroe High School. His father, Joseph Loveless, works in the employment reserve department at the Middletown Works.
  • Cameron Mathis, Middletown, Ohio, a student at Middletown High School. His father, Stephen Mathis, works in the quality department at the Middletown Works.
  • Dane Miller, Dearborn, Mich., a student at Divine Child High School. His father, Richard Miller, is in the finance department at the Dearborn Works.
  • Sean Newport, Mason, Ohio, a student at William Mason High School. His father, Roger Newport, works in the finance department at the corporate headquarters in West Chester.
  • Haley Pierce, Ashland, Ky., a student at Paul G. Blazer High School. Her father, Joseph Pierce, works in the steelmaking department at the Ashland Works.
  • Hannah Pohlabel, Hamilton, Ohio, a student at Fairfield City High School. Her father, James Pohlabel, works in the customer service department at the corporate headquarters in West Chester.
  • Mackenzie Rodgers, Butler, Pa., a student at Knoch High School. Her father, Patrick Rodgers, works in the melt shop at the Butler Works.
  • Nick Rook, Mason, Ohio, a student at William Mason High School. His mother, Lynn Rook, works in the outside processing department at the corporate headquarters in West Chester.
  • Meredith Sergent, Catlettsburg, Ky., a student at Paul G. Blazer High School. Her father, Timothy Sergent, works in the transportation department at the Ashland Works.
  • Brendan Waltman, Fenelton, Pa., a student at Karns City High School. His father, Timothy Waltman, works in the silicon department at the Butler Works.
  • Matthew Zanella, Butler, Pa., a student at Knoch High School. His father, Robert Zanella, works in the scheduling department at the Butler Works.
  • Jacqueline Ziegman, Avon, Ohio, a student at Avon High School. Her father, Ronald Ziegman, works in the hot strip mill at the Dearborn Works.
