Alcan alloys reduce Airbus weight

Alcan Inc., Montreal, worked closely with Airbus to develop aluminum alloys to meet the requirements for Airbus A380 components.

According to the company, a 10 percent weight reduction per aircraft was achieved by combining new alloys and joining techniques. The company estimates that the weight reduction will save 90,000 metric tons of aviation fuel during the lifetime of one aircraft, representing a 300,000-metric-ton reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
