Alcoa expands R&D center to increase additive manufacturing capabilities

Lightweight metals provider Alcoa, New York, is expanding the Alcoa Technical Center near Pittsburgh to accelerate the development of advanced 3-D printing materials and processes. The company will produce materials designed for additive technologies to meet increasing demand for complex, high-performance 3-D-printed parts for the aerospace, automotive, medical, and building and construction markets.

The $60 million expansion builds on the firm’s additive manufacturing capabilities in California, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The company has been creating 3-D-printed tools, molds, and prototypes for the past 20 years.
