Aleris to add aluminum automotive body sheet capabilities in Kentucky

Cleveland-based Aleris will invest $350 million to upgrade capabilities at its aluminum rolling mill in Lewisport, Ky. Heat treatment and finishing capabilities will be added, including a new wide cold mill, two continuous annealing lines, and an automotive innovation center.

The investment is in anticipation of growth in North American automotive demand as the industry pursues broader aluminum use for the production of lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles, says the company.

Construction will begin this fall, with a goal of shipping automotive body sheet material to customers by early 2017. When fully operational, the new facility will allow for the production of 480 million lbs. of aluminum autobody sheet annually.
