April 29, 2014

Castrip LLC, Charlotte, N.C., has signed a license agreement with a North American electric arc furnace steelmaker to build and operate a plant using the Castrip® thin-strip casting process.

The twin-roll casting and rolling plant will be able to produce 500,000 tons of thin-gauge, high-strength sheet steel for local manufacturing and construction markets. The ultrathin cast strip coils will be up to 66.14 in. wide, with gauges from 0.03 to 0.07 in.

The process equipment and technical services for the new facility will be provided by a consortium comprising Siemens Metals Technologies, IHI, and Castrip LLC.

Start-up of the new facility is expected in early 2016.
