Gallatin Steel receives awards for employee health

Gallatin Steel, Ghent, Ky., a producer of flat-rolled carbon steel, recently was recognized as one of the Healthiest Companies in America by Interactive Health Solutions (IHS), Chicago. Gallatin Steel won awards in two categories: Best in Class Among Manufacturers and Most Improved Overall. The awards were presented during a recognition ceremony in May.

The IHS Healthiest Companies in America recognition program measures year-over-year improvement in aggregate employee health metrics, including blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and triglyceride levels. IHS bases its assessment on measurements partially influenced by lifestyle choices such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and refraining from tobacco use. Of the 1,000 participating companies, Gallatin Steel says it is one of 13 to have earned dual awards of distinction.

A national provider of population health management programs, IHS conducts annual health evaluations and encourages companies to support preventive medical care options for employees.

Since its inception, Gallatin Steel has implemented a variety of initiatives to encourage fitness and health, including establishing a wellness council, creating a 3-mile walking/jogging trail, building an on-site fitness facility with new exercise equipment, and conducting regular weight loss contests.
