HRB prices up slightly in China, down elsewhere

The bi-monthly SteelBenchmarker™ Chinese HRB ex-works price for April 25 rose 0.8 percent to $633 per ton for the third consecutive rise. The Western European HRB price fell 1.2 percent to $830 per ton (on a Euro basis, it fell 2.2 percent), ex-works, for the second consecutive decline. The United States HRB spot price fell 1.9 percent to $951 per metric ton, FOB the mill, for the second consecutive decline. The World export HRB price fell 3.7 percent to $731 per ton, FOB the port of export, for the second consecutive decline.

The four benchmark prices for HRB for April 25, 2011 are:

  • U.S.—$951 per metric ton ($879 per net ton), FOB the mill—down $18 per ton from $969 ($879 net) two weeks ago but up $350 per ton from the recent low of $601 ($545 net) on Nov. 8, 2010. It is up $175 per ton from the previous high of $776 ($704 net) on May 10, 2010 and down $252 (20.9 percent) per ton from the record peak of $1,203 ($1,091 net) on July 28, 2008.
  • China—$633 per metric ton, ex-works—up $5 per ton from $628 two weeks ago and up $151 per ton from the recent low of $482 on July 12, 2010. It is up $59 per ton from the previous high of $574 on April 26, 2010, but down $100 (13.6 percent) from the record peak of $733 on July 14, 2008.
  • Western Europe—$830 (€567 per metric ton, ex-works—down $10 per ton from $840 (€580) two weeks ago (on a Euro basis, it was down €13) but up $162 (€73) per ton from the recent low of $668 (€494) on Nov. 22, 2010. It is up $88 (down €17) from the previous high of $742 (€584) on May 10, 2010 and down $374 (€189) (31.1 percent) per ton from the record peak of $1,204 €756) on July 14, 2008.
  • World Export Price—$731 per metric ton, FOB the port of export—down $28 per ton from $759 two weeks ago but up $147 per ton from the recent low of $584 on July 12, 2010. It is up $13 per ton from the previous high of $718 on April 26, 2010, but down $382 (34.3 percent) per ton from the record peak of $1,113 on July 28, 2008.
