Mississippi Silicon opens $200 million manufacturing facility

Mississippi Silicon has opened the first silicon metal manufacturing facility to be built in the U.S. in more than 40 years.

The $200 million, 170,000-sq.-ft. plant, located in Burnsville, Miss., will produce about 36,000 metric tons of silicon metal each year for products from computer chips to automotive manufacturing to chemicals used in industrial, commercial, and consumer applications.

The company currently has more than 100 permanent employees. This number is expected to grow to 200 in the coming years.
