RIOS Accreditation Program opens for scrap recyclers

The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB), Washington, D.C., has officially opened the RIOS Accreditation Program, which enables scrap recycling companies that implement the Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) to obtain third-party certification of their RIOS compliance.

RIOS is the scrap recycling industry's standard for integrated quality, environmental, and health and safety (QEH&S) management systems. It was established, funded, and developed for the benefit of the industry by ISRI and 50 RIOS charter member companies.

ANAB's opening of the accreditation program starts the process of authorizing certifying bodies (CBs) and their auditors to conduct RIOS certification audits at RIOS member company facilities. Only ANAB-accredited CBs and their auditors may conduct such audits and issue RIOS certification documents.

CBs interested in conducting RIOS certification audits as a line of business may apply to ANAB to begin the process of becoming accredited RIOS CBs. Because RIOS includes QEH&S components based on ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001, respectively, the accreditation program builds off a CB's existing accreditations and contains only a few additional requirements.
