SMS group modernizes CSP plants at Nucor Steel

SMS group has completed the modernization of the compact strip production (CSP®) mill at Nucor Steel in Berkeley, S.C. The modernization of the double-strand machine, supplied by SMS group in 1996, included increasing the final strip width to 74 in.

In addition, one of the two casters was fitted with new molds, a new four-cylinder oscillation system, wider segments, and a new bending and straightening unit. A seventh finishing stand and a new X-Pact® level-2 automation system were added to the rolling mill. The automation system includes profile, contour, and flatness control systems, as well as a cooling model.

SMS also installed an induction heating system between the furnace and rolling mill so that the temperature of the thin slabs can be increased right before they run into the rolling mill.
