SSAB, LKAB, Vattenfall launch initiative for a CO2-free steel industry in Sweden

Swedish companies SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall have announced that they are launching an initiative to solve the CO2 problem in the Swedish steel industry. Together, the companies involved will initiate work to develop a steel production process that emits water rather than CO2.

While SSAB’s existing production system is very efficient in terms of CO2 emissions, existing steelmaking technology using coke plants and blast furnaces means the company is Sweden’s largest single source of CO2 emissions.
