TMK IPSCO opens Baytown heat treat facility

Construction of a new heat treat facility has been completed at TMK IPSCO's Baytown Works in Baytown, Texas. The facility is designed to heat treat and finish mainly seamless tubing and casing sizes from 2 3/8 in. to 7 5/8 in. in diameter.

The project was initiated over 2 years ago and is coming on stream at a time when more high performance pipe is needed in the American market, the company says. The new facility is capable of annually producing 85,000 tons of quenched and tempered products certified to API 5CT standards and employs approximately 50 people. The facility has also been designed to produce an additional 15,000 tons per year with minor upgrades as market demand increases. The existing Baytown facility also performs various finishing operations such as pipe upsetting and threading, and this new heat treat addition complements those processes.
