Messer Cutting Systems marks 60 years in business

Messer Cutting Systems, Menomonee Falls, Wis., celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015. In the U.S., the company began under the name CRO Eng. in 1955 as a flame-cutting machinery manufacturer with three employees working in 3,000 sq. ft. of rented space in Milwaukee.

The firm pioneered many fundamental applications that are common today, such as NC, CNC, and laser cutting. In 1969 the company delivered the first U.S.-built NC laser cutting machine for shape cutting titanium in the aerospace industry.

In 1968 at a welding fair in Essen, Germany, the company displayed the first U.S.-built NC plasma arc gantry cutting machine. Messer Greisheim GmbH saw the machine as new competition and purchased the company in 1973, changing the name to MG Cutting Systems, which eventually became Messer Cutting Systems, a subsidiary of Messer Cutting Systems GmbH Germany.

The firm currently has a 100,000-sq.-ft. facility with 190 employees, manufacturing oxyfuel, plasma, and laser plate machinery for industries including steel service centers, metal fabrication, structural steel, agricultural, energy, shipbuilding, transportation, and construction.
