Starrett celebrates 125th anniversary

In 2005 the L.S. Starrett Co. celebrates its 125th anniversary. Beginning with a single tool, the company has grown into a global manufacturer with a line of more than 5,000 products, including precision measuring tools, shop tools, saw blades, and metrology equipment.

Laroy Sunderland Starrett began the company in 1880 by producing the combination square, which continues to be in use today. Starrett earned close to 100 patents in his lifetime. His accomplishments include design variations to calipers, spring dividers, and indicating gauges, as well as development of the modern micrometer.

The company now employs 2,150 people worldwide. Its principal plant is located in Athol, Mass. Other plant sites are located in Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Brazil, Scotland, China, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
