BorgWarner equips Volkswagen diesel engines with turbocharger technology

BorgWarner, Auburn Hills, Mich., is supplying its variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers for the newly developed 1.4-l, three-cylinder diesel engines from the Volkswagen Group.

Engineered to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, the turbochargers boost the performance of the 55- and 66-kW diesel engines, the company reports. Both engines comply with Euro 6 emissions standards and improve fuel economy up to 21 percent compared with the predecessor vehicles.

To improve thermodynamics and engine response at very low RPM, patented S-shaped guide vanes regulate the turbocharger’s turbine output by changing the inflow angle and speed at the turbine wheel inlet.
