DOE announces $137 million investment in commercial, passenger vehicle efficiency

The Department of Energy, Washington, D.C., has announced up to $137 million in investments for two programs to develop next-generation technologies to help industry go beyond current EPA and NHTSA standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles while accelerating technology advances for passenger cars and light trucks.

One initiative, SuperTruck II, will fund four project teams—Cummins Inc., Daimler Trucks North America LLC, Navistar Inc., and Volvo Technology of America LLC—to develop cost-effective technologies that more than double the freight efficiency of 18-wheel trucks.

Through another initiative, 35 new projects will receive $57 million to develop vehicle technologies to reduce carbon emissions and petroleum consumption in passenger cars and light trucks and improve the efficiency of plug-in electric,alternative-fuel, and conventional vehicles.
