Former Harley-Davidson communications strategist to give keynote address at FMA annual meeting

Ken Schmidt, former director of communications at Harley-Davidson, will deliver the opening keynote presentation for The FABRICATOR®'s Leadership Summit and Toll Processing Conference, Feb. 25-27, 2015, at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee (Orlando), Fla.

"Ken Schmidt played a pivotal role in one of the most renowned turnarounds in corporate history—helping Harley-Davidson rebuild its brand—and as a result took the company from the verge of bankruptcy to global dominance," said Jim Warren, FMA's senior director of member services, education, and foundation. "We are very excited that he will address our audience about how to create compelling, brand-building messages."

The longtime motorcycle enthusiast's formal association with Harley-Davidson began in 1985. As a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations, Schmidt was asked to work with the then-struggling Harley-Davidson to help restore the company's image and create demand for its motorcycles. Within a few short years, Harley-Davidson became one of the most visible and frequently reported-on companies in the world, while sales of its motorcycles skyrocketed.

In 1990 Schmidt became director of Harley-Davidson's corporate and financial communications, serving as its primary spokesperson to the media and financial communities. He appeared numerous times on network news programs and was frequently called upon by business media to share his insights on nontraditional communications, customer attraction, and brand-building.

"Ken's passionate message will inspire our audience with innovative ways to differentiate themselves and grow their businesses," said Warren.

FMA's annual meeting offers knowledge and skill development opportunities for those working to move ahead in today's competitive market. Educational tracks will focus on business management concerns and the latest technical advancements. Presentations on economic outlooks and market trends will be led by world-class speakers. In addition, attendees will hear about the progressively stronger and lighter metals being developed and get advice on how to thrive in a multimaterial world. Networking time will include plant tours, golf tournaments, and evening receptions.

Based in Rockford, Ill., FMA is a professional organization with nearly 2,500 members working together to improve the metal fabricating and forming industry.
