GM to cut 10,000 salaried workers

Detroit-based General Motors announced today that it is cutting 10,000 salaried jobs as part of a restructuring plan to meet the government's deadline of Feb. 17. The plan is required by the terms of the $9.4 billion low-interest government load to GM. The company is seeking an additional $4 billion from the Treasury Department under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

The automaker is reducing the number of salaried workers from 73,000 to 63,000. Among the reductions are about 3,400 of the company's 29,500 salaried U.S. jobs.
