Green Steel conference to focus on environmental sustainability

Steel Business Briefing, Pittsburgh, is hosting its first Green Steel conference, focusing on environmental sustainability in the global steel industry, on May 20 and 21 at the Marriott at Metro Center in Washington, D.C.

According to Steel Business Briefing, the iron and steel industry is responsible for at least 5 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions. Though the intergovernmental talks on setting specific emission targets for future years seem to be going nowhere, most governments agree that much needs to be done to reduce discharges. The steel industry stands to gain as well as lose from such developments, reports the organization.

The conference is intended to highlight ways in which steel producers, consumers, and industry suppliers can prepare themselves for the changes and challenges they might face. The topics to be covered include:

  • The impact of existing and possible new legislation on the steel industry.
  • The response of mills to current developments.
  • The implications for suppliers of raw materials, including scrap, iron ore, coking coal, power, and gas.
  • The response of construction, automotive, and other steel markets to the new climate.
  • The activities of plant and equipment suppliers.
