Ironworker apprentices participate in annual competition

Toronto Local 721 of the Ironworkers Union recently hosted a competition for ironworker apprentices. The annual competition allows apprentices and staff to come together and share best practices.

Competing apprentices displayed their knowledge, dexterity, and skills in eight different areas: a written test; welding, burning, and instrument tests; knot tying; rod tying; ornamental installation; and column climb.

The winners of the Outstanding Ironworker Apprentice Challenge are:

  • First Place - Andrew Hernandez, New Jersey Local 31
  • Second Place - Keith Fergus, Toronto Local 721
  • Third Place - Tyler Haanpaa, St. Louis Local 27

The winners of the column climb challenge are:

  • First Place - Matt Hlywiak, Philadelphia Local 401 - 5.73 seconds
  • Second Place - Brian Knecht, Philadelphia Local 401 - 7.31 seconds
  • Third Place - Phillipe Charland, Calgary Local 725 - 7.44 seconds
