London Taxi builds plant to produce electric vehicles

The London Taxi Co. (LTC) has opened the U.K.'s first car plant dedicated to the production of range-extended electric vehicles (EVs). The plant, located in Coventry, U.K., will produce the world's first purpose-built, mass-market electric taxi.

LTC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Geely, has invested more than $374 million in the new site and the next-generation London taxi, which will be produced at the plant and exported around the world. The investment and expansion of LTC has created more than 1,000 new jobs, including 200 engineers and 30 apprenticeships.

The site has the capacity to build more than 20,000 vehicles per year. The taxi vehicle uses Volvo electric powertrain system technologies and components, comprising a new EV lightweight platform while retaining the iconic London taxi design.

Each test vehicle will cover almost 310,000 miles, often in extreme conditions, to ensure that no city is off-limits. The electric taxi will be offered for sale in London in Q4 2017 and globally in early 2018.
