Norsk Titanium, Premium Aerotec begin joint program for additive-manufactured titanium parts
Norsk Titanium AS, Oslo, Norway, has announced that a premier shipment of Airbus A350 XWB test parts manufactured with its patented Rapid Plasma Deposition™ (RPD™) process has been received and finish-machined by Premium Aerotec.
The titanium Ti6Al4V sample parts, for which Premium Aerotec holds design authority, currently are undergoing stringent engineering analysis at the company's testing facilities. Results will be used for the qualification program in a joint approach between Norsk Titanium and Premium Aerotec as the next step to develop full industrial technology maturity.
The parts were made from Aerotec’s 3-D CATIA® files in weeks, the company reports. Norsk Titanium expects the parts to save Airbus $2 million to $3 million per aircraft.
