QCMI wins #1 Healthiest Companies Award for second consecutive year

Precision machining company Quality Controlled Mfg. Inc. (QCMI), Santee, Calif., has received the 2015 #1 Healthiest Companies Award in the small company category (1 to 100 employees), sponsored by the San Diego Business Journal, for the second consecutive year. Thirty-one awards were presented in seven categories: small company, medium company, large company, mega-company, company based outside of San Diego, service provider, and rising star.

QCMI qualified for the No. 5 position in 2013 and it made the No. 1 rank in 2014. For this year’s entry, QCMI launched its “12 Steps to a Healthier You” campaign. The program involved both nutritional and physical activities. Two personal trainers led group activities and completed health screenings. Other key components of its wellness program included tobacco cessation, stress/weight management, and employee assistance programs.

In 2012 when it initiated its five-day-a-week certified trainer, employees went through a thorough health screening evaluation and assessment. The manufacturer’s workforce was considered 50 percent obese. Last year the percentage dropped to 25 percent – in 2015 it has dropped another 15 percent. The manufacturer also has experienced a drop in workers’ compensation claims, starting at $200,000 in 2011, $1,495 in 2012, $408 in 2013, and $0 in 2014.
