Sciaky to provide turnkey EBAM system to Lockheed Martin Space Systems

Sciaky Inc., Chicago, a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries Inc. (PSI) and provider of large-scale additive manufacturing systems, has received a purchase order from Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Bethesda, Md., to provide a turnkey electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM) system for use in the production of titanium propulsion tanks.

Starting with a 3-D model from a CAD program, the fully articulated, moving electron beam gun deposits metal (via wire feedstock) layer by layer until the part reaches near-net shape. From there the near-net shape part requires minor postproduction machining. Its 110- by 110- by 110-in. build envelope will allow Lockheed Martin to produce large titanium parts with almost no waste.
