Friedman Industries opens steel coil processing facility

Friedman Industries Inc. has announced the opening of a steel coil processing plant located in Decatur, Ala. The facility is designed to convert hot-rolled coils received from the adjacent Nucor Steel Co. mill into hot-rolled sheet and plate, relieved of distortions through the use of temper-passing and leveling equipment.

The facility began operation in August 2008. With 48,000 sq. ft. of plant and warehouse and 2,000 sq. ft. of offices, the facility can serve customers within 500 miles of Decatur. The new plant follows the Friedman business model of locating next to a major steel mill.

Temper-passing and leveling eliminate such common coiled steel problems as coil set, center buckle, crossbow, wavy edge, and twisted strip.

The company operates coil processing facilities in Hickman, Ark., and Decatur. In addition, through its Texas Tubular Products Division located in Lone Star, Texas, the company manufactures, processes, and distributes pipe products.
