SMS group builds fifth-generation Sutton extrusion press in U.S.

SMS group, Düsseldorf, Germany, now is building the fifth generation of the Sutton extrusion press in the U.S. During a ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Sutton brand, SMS presented the new Sutton MK-V in Cranberry Township, Pa. The extrusion press has been developed over the last two years. All mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components and spare parts come from the U.S.

The press's plate-type frame helps make it significantly more rigid. The linear guides for the container holders and moving crosshead are nearly maintenance-free, unlike the flat guides used previously. The pumps are located inside the tank to reduce the space requirement.

The press motors are started with soft starters, allowing the pumps not required during the extrusion process to be shut down and facilitating a soft run-up when they are switched back on.

The new press is offered in the NAFTA region market in four different sizes, with press forces from 2,000 to 4,000 tons, corresponding to 18 to 35 MN.
