Zetec obtains PDI qualification for piping weld inspection technology

Zetec has obtained a performance demonstration initiative (PDI) qualification for a technique to inspect austenitic and ferritic piping welds using phased array technology.

The qualification is according to ASME Code Section XI, Appendix VIII, Supplements 2 and 3. The scope covers detection and length sizing in ferritic and austenitic pipe welds from 12 in. to 36 in. NPS, and for wall thicknesses from 0.6 in. to 3.0 in.

The qualified procedure uses encoded, manually driven phased array ultrasound. It uses 2-D phased array probe technology and prescribes the company's OmniScan PA data acquisition unit for encoded but manually driven data acquisition. The encoded data acquisition was performed using the recently developed manual pipe scanner that is adaptable to pipes from 4 in. to 36 in. in diameter.

The inspection procedure is the result of a collaboration between Zetec and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
