SMS Meer supplies pipe welding line to CSI

SMS Meer, Germany, has delivered an electrical resistance welding (ERW) line for pipe diameters from 8.625 to 24 in. to CSI Tubular Products Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of California Steel Industries Inc., Fontana, Calif. The line achieves production speeds up to 114.8 FPM, producing up to 400,000 tons of pipe per year.

Coil payoff can be performed from above and below to help improve strip alignment within the line’s forming process, depending on the direction of rolling of the inserted strip. The quick-change system for the URD® stands is supported by the CSS® Quicksetting system, which employs database-assisted plant settings. The stand drives can be controlled separately.

SMS Elotherm's EloWeld™ 1800 pipe welding unit is integrated into the central section of the pipe mill for welding longitudinal seams. The downstream EloSeam™ 3000 pipe seam annealing unit can be traversed longitudinally for post-annealing where necessary.

Wall thicknesses are from 0.157 to 0.750 in., and pipe lengths are 20 to 80 ft.
