By Alexander Mijares
OPENED: 1979
WHY: My father, Mike Mijares, president and CEO of MJM, founded the company as a one-man shop making prototypes for roughly 22 accounts in a building the size of a two car-garage. The minority-owned small business that specializes in fabricating precision sheet metal parts and CNC machining now operates in a 50,000- sq.- ft., ultramodern, fully air-conditioned facility with more than 70 employees and 250 customers, including Fortune 500 companies, multinationals, and local businesses. We average three new customers a month.
Over the last three decades we have consolidated many processes under our roof - from precision sheet metal fabrication and machining to finishing and assembly – capitalizing on our experience to meet today’s pricing and timing requirements.
CAPABILITIES:
Precision sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, and assemblies.
SHOP WORKHORSE(S): (Most-used/indispensable equipment)

Without a doubt, our staff is the most indispensable. Many of our employees have been with MJM for years, and without them, we would not be where we are today. Next is our top-of-the-line equipment, consisting of Amada CNC lasers, CNC turrets, CNC machining, and forming equipment.
We also have robotic welders, spot welders, tumblers, Timesavers, and other equipment that run all day long.
MOST UNUSUAL OR MEMORABLE PROJECT:
MJM’s most unusual job would have to be the Turner MIC project for the Miami International Airport for which we fabricated 40 car wash storage cages that each measured 50 by 10 by 8 ft.
The most memorable was a 3-year, 24-hour-a-day project manufacturing 1,500 of 6-ft. and 1,500 of 7-ft. rack enclosures a year for Racal-Datacom (Figure 1).
GREATEST CHALLENGE:
Our greatest challenge has been quick turnarounds. For years we were accustomed to large runs, small runs, and even prototypes with lead-times of several weeks. Now everyone wants their parts in two weeks or less. So we had to do whatever it took to make this happen, and we have succeeded.
LOOKING AHEAD:
We are hoping to expand our facility, along with machinery and staff. Our goal is to operate 24 hours a day.
ADVICE FOR WOULD-BE SHOP OWNERS:
Continue always to look for new ideas and ways to improve yourself and company. We are living in a very fast-paced society, and it is important to keep up with the times.
