Fiber laser welding system joins dissimilar materials, thicknesses

Automation Alternatives has introduced the RubyLaser fiber laser welding system. With its spot size as small as 0.001 to 0.002 in. and fast weld speeds, the system delivers high power density while minimizing the HAZ, the company reports. The machine is suitable for welding dissimilar materials, welding very thin materials, and joining thin and thick parts.

The laser welding system handles rapid prototyping from microwelding to high-strength welds. Typical materials include stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, INCONEL®, HASTELLOY®, nitinol, and Kovar®.

The laser power controller can modulate the laser over a very wide range, which helps ensure that sufficiently high laser energy is applied to melt and join very different thicknesses of material without overheating or damaging the thinner part during the welding process.
