Glass-fiber tape supports molten metal below weld joint

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has developed a super-heavy-duty Argweld® Weld Backing Tape™ that provides support to molten metal below a weld joint to produce weld underbeads when welding with currents up to 600 amps.

This glass-fiber weld backing system supports and protects the weld root from oxidation. It traps the inert gas from the weld torch to hold the gas surrounding the weld pool, effectively providing a backpurge facility.

Four grades of the tape are available for use up to 80, 160, 240, or 600 amps. Each tape comprises a 3-in.-wide aluminum adhesive tape backing strip; a 1-in.-wide band of woven glass fiber matting runs down the center. The thickness of the glass-fiber matting differs to match the welding current in use.

Using the tape, the welder can weld with GMAW, GTAW, or plasma arc welding to join all weldable metals without changing the chemistry or metallurgy of the weld.
