High-payload robot designed for short cycle times

ABB has introduced the IRB 8700, its highest-payload, multipurpose industrial robot. It has a reach of 11.5 ft. and can handle a payload of up to 1,763 lbs. (1.1 tons with the wrist down; 1,389 lbs. with LeanID). The robot is targeted for material handling applications in the automotive and transportation industries.

The robot has one motor and one gear per axis, while most other robots in this size class use dual motors and gears. It uses no gas springs, but rather a counterweight and mechanical springs for counterbalancing. These design elements allow the robot to deliver short cycle times, making it 25 percent faster than comparable competitor robots in its payload range, the company states.
