Software feature helps simplify machining of shaped holes

Prima Power Laserdyne’s ShapeSoft™ feature, recently added to the Laserdyne S94P control for multiaxis laser systems, helps simplify the creation of programs for producing cone, oblique cone, fan, and racetrack holes in a variety of turbine engine components, including blades, nozzle guide vanes, and combustors for aeroengine and industrial gas turbine applications.

Creation of a shaped hole at high speeds with the feature involves drilling a metering or pilot hole, machining the shape to the required depth and dimensions, and machining the metering hole to remove material that may have accumulated in the metering hole during the shape machining process.

Users can select process parameters for each of the three process steps, including the parameter database record to be used, feed rate, and dwell time after the shutter is open before processing begins.
